Zusammenfassung To develop a physical, three-dimensional product out of a set of given variables and operators, complex information processing and the application of problem-solving strategies is needed. As the humans' cognitive and creative capabilities are restricted by the working-memory capacity, suitable support functions and tools are needed in the design process. Although a variety of digital support systems exists, their empirical examination and evaluation is still in short supply. Additionally, most support systems rely on desktop-based systems and do not provide realistic images of the product in terms of size and scale, three-dimensional appearance, context etc. Furthermore, most supporting systems are only applicable in later stages of product development, leaving out the early, product-defining design stages. In particular, systems which provide immersive spatial modelling experiences are not established in industrial practice and product development cycles yet. This paper presents a case study of a design approach which integrates Virtual Reality (VR), CAD and Rapid Prototyping. The results show that immersive 3D sketching and CAD modelling provide complementary functionalities in terms of scale, interactivity and shape generation.
