Design Sprint for designing sustainable products at Fab Lab Berlin


In the ecoMaker research project, FabLab Berlin and scientists from the TU Berlin have jointly been working on the topic of sustainability since October 1, 2017. The goal of the DBU-funded project is to anchor approaches to sustainable product development in open workshops, so-called maker spaces, within two years by providing training courses and digital tools.
The users of maker spaces, so-called "makers", are to be provided with knowledge and needs-oriented tools that raise awareness for sustainable production and support the resource-saving design of individual projects. These tools will be developed together with the makers and then distributed as open source offers to users throughout Germany.

Who do we want to reach?

Beside the current maker space users, such as private individuals and small and medium-sized enterprises, ecoMaker also aims to reach schoolchildren, apprentices and students. This is intended to address a preferably comprehensive part of the actual as well as potential maker scene.

How do we want to do that?

To ensure access to Maker Spaces and improve their ecological standards, FabLabs are designed as extracurricular learning venues. A team of practical partners from the Berlin educational landscape is involved in the development and testing of suitable teaching and learning offers.

Various modules are offered and made available for this purpose, ranging from workshops for the compressed transfer of knowledge and practical applications in the context of sustainable product development to the ecoDesign Sprint with a specific product reference.

A digital analysis assistant, currently in the process of development, documents and compares processes and materials during product development with regard to sustainability.

Already in Maker Spaces created Sustainable products are collected with reproduction instructions and a knowledge space to provide additional knowledge about sustainable product design are provided in the form of a teaching and learning platform.

In addition, a series of physical exhibits will be developed to illustrate "do's and don'ts" of sustainable product design. They supplement an augmented reality exhibition that can be transferred to all Maker Spaces, which enables a partial virtual walk through Maker Spaces and uses common machines as markers.
