Functional virtual inspection systems for robot-based quality inspection

Robot-based measuring methods allow a reproducible evaluation of products with regard to various objective physical quality criteria. By coupling measurement robotics with methods from psychophysics and experimental psychology, it is already possible today to carry out a holistic evaluation of product quality on various functional elements. However, today's systems do not offer a complete virtualization of robot-based quality assurance processes, which enable quality assurance at an early stage in the form of purely virtual and also hybrid prototype tests.

The aim of the R&D project ROBVRAR is the development of a virtual measuring robot as well as its connection to a generally valid tool for the creation of functional virtual prototypes for a virtual quality test bench by first coupling the procedure for the "haptic testing of an object" with the approaches of the functional virtual prototype (FDMU) and the Smart Hybrid Prototyping (SHP). This worldwide new approach for the first and complete virtualization of robot-based quality assurance processes offers the potential to perform robot-based quality assurance at an early stage in the form of purely virtual and also hybrid prototype tests. The resulting early determination of objective and subjective quality criteria of future products facilitates faster and more cost-effective production in just a few development steps. In addition, by earlier inclusion of subjective evaluation criteria, the products can be better adapted to the needs of the customer and their quality can be controlled in such a way that only the perception-oriented quality actually required is implemented. This enables a more cost-effective production.
The core work of the ROBVRAR R&D project consists of the development of different tools for the coupling of the approaches in order to virtualize prototypes, i.e. the objects to be examined in the quality inspection, in the required model quality and to make the virtual prototypes haptically experienceable by coupling them with an input device. In this way, a multimodal, i.e. coupled visual, acoustic and haptic interaction with humans is achieved. In addition, the measuring robot can be virtualized in the model quality required for quality testing.

For this novel quality inspection, a test method is to be developed which allows the planning of test set-up and execution of purely virtual quality inspection tests with the help of a set-up consisting of a purely virtual prototype which is tested by a purely virtual measuring robot.
The ROBVRAR tools developed in the R&D project are flexible and transferable to the majority of all production processes, regardless of the industry. This opens up a broad field of application, from producing SMEs to globally operating large production companies. After the successful completion of the project, ROBVRAR- thus makes an important contribution to the increase of added value in manufacturing companies and the conservation of resources as well as to the expansion of Germany as a business location.
